EN Transboundary coordination of nature conservation is difficult due to differences in legal systems, land use patterns, and attitudes of inhabitants of neighbouring countries towards related restrictions. There is a number of protected areas in the Carpathians on both sides of Polish-Ukrainian border, however the level of coordination of mutual efforts towards nature conservation is low. Possible solution could be an agreement on a joint, large scale protection of some umbrella species, with considerable requirements towards the area of the home range and the quality of habitat. An example of such species in Polish-Ukrainian part of the Carpathians could be the wisent Bison bonasus. Home ranges of its herds are much larger than the area of local national parks, preferred habitats are distant from major anthropogenic features, and its level of social acceptance is very high. Population numbers of this species in the region are growing, and there are already positive effects of mutual efforts towards its reintroduction.
